A highly satisfactory year for Ameropa

  • Sales increase by 30% to CHF 9.6 bn
  • Volume reduction by 7.5% to 29.5 mio tons
  • Ameropa Foundation funds partially reallocated to emergency relief activities

Binningen, March 3, 2022 – Swiss agricultural producer and trader
reports an unexpectedly strong fiscal year 2021. Due to the sharp price
increase for grains and especially fertilizers, sales increased by 30%
year on year, from CHF 7.383 bn to CHF9,642 bn, although sold volumes
decreased by 7.5% from 31.858 mio tons to 29.465 mio tons. Operating
profit is above budget and previous year.
Like in 2020, all
production and logistics facilities of the Ameropa Group were able to
continue their activities despite the Covid-19 related restrictions and
challenges. All staff continued in employment, without any short working
hours and staff reductions. Agriculture worldwide is suffering however
from excessive price increases and shortage of fertilizers. The
situation is especially challenging in Europe due to the lack of gas,
the raw material for nitrogen fertilizers, and the five-fold increase in
gas prices. As a result, throughout the industry, several European
production sites are presently closed. Also Ameropa’s Azomures facility
suspended production in mid-December 2021.
The group strategy
review launched in 2021 was completed and incorporates the goals of the
new Green Deal of the EU, especially the reduction of GHG emissions,
compared to 2005, by 61% by 2030. Our fertilizer factory Azomures is on
track to reach this goal already by 2025.
As in 2020, the
Ameropa Foundation provided humanitarian relief in the poor communities
in Brazil and Uganda where it is active and which have been hard hit by
Covid. Meanwhile, the construction of the community playground in
Kamwokya continued as planned and its opening is foreseen by end March
2022. The Foundation has also edited the book ‚Building Optimism‘ which
documents 30 years of commitment to the development of the Brazilian
community Mae Luiza.

Update in respect of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia
Ameropa does not have significant exposure to Russia and Ukraine.
However, considering current geopolitical context and related market
volatility, Ameropa does and will continue to closely monitor the impact
the development of the situation may have on its markets and business
